THE ART OF TEACHING
Teaching is an art, it is not merely the transmission of knowledge. In this article, I want to talk about "The Art of Teaching".
But first of all, let's answer this question: Is teaching really an art?
Well, if you ask a creative teacher like me this question, you are very likely to get a spontaneous "of course it is!", and I may probably give you that "isn't it pretty obvious?" look! That is because teaching has always been my passion and part of my art. In fact, one of the reasons I enjoy teaching is because it helps me express my art to the full!
Here comes the next question: What do we mean by 'the art of teaching'?
The art of teaching is the practice of fostering students discovery through creativity and emotional intelligence, transforming rigid curriculum into personalised, meaningful learning. It moves beyond mere instruction, building relationships and utilizing unique, adaptive methods to engage students deeply and inspire lifelong curiosity. This means guiding students to uncover knowledge themselves rather than just receiving it. It requires empathy, patience and flexibility, adapting techniques to individual student needs and classroom dynamics. The purpose is to encourage critical thinking, self-realization, and lasting, meaningful connections between students and the subject matter. The art of teaching is, indeed, the art of assisting discovery.
What role do creative and empathetic teachers play in the art of teaching?
Creative and empathetic teachers do not simply impart knowledge. They stir emotions and strive to reach the hearts of their students. They look for ways to stimulate and motivate their students, creating a relaxing atmosphere that encourages interaction and participation, an environment where each student feels comfortable, enthusiastic and motivated to learn.
Yes, teaching is an art! It is not a matter of "techniques", it has more to do with the heart. While foundational techniques are often necessary, the essence of art lies in its ability to communicate, evoke emotion, and convey ideas rather than merely showcasing skill. The art of teaching must involve your heart and your soul!
